He Sends the Unqualified Anyway

Elena double-checked her badge outside the ICU at 6:45 a.m., the same way she has for eleven years. The hallway lights buzzed on, the same as every other morning, and the same old thought showed up right on schedule: they promoted the wrong person to charge nurse. She’s never said it out loud to anyone on the floor. The feeling isn’t unique to hospitals, though — it shows up in classrooms, warehouses, boardrooms, anywhere the quiet certainty lives that if they really knew you, they’d have sent someone else.

C — Clarity — The résumé you keep rereading

Name the assignment in front of you this week that makes you feel like an understudy in your own job. Most people carry a private file of reasons they’re not the right person for it — a mistake from last quarter, a skill they never quite mastered, a comparison to whoever had the role before them. That file gets reread every Monday morning whether you open it on purpose or not.

H — Hear — Sent, not screened

“Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh…?” He said, “But I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:10–12, ESV)

Moses’s objection isn’t answered with a résumé review. God doesn’t argue that Moses is, in fact, qualified — He simply says I will be with you. The word for “send” here carries the sense of commissioning, not auditioning: someone doesn’t apply to be sent, they’re dispatched by the one who already decided. Moses stayed a stutterer, a fugitive, a shepherd with a criminal record. None of that got fixed before the sending. The presence was the qualification the whole time.

Paul makes the same move centuries later, almost as if he’d read this story and taken notes: God chose what the world calls foolish, weak, and low so that no one could boast in His presence (1 Corinthians 1:27–29). That’s not an isolated encouragement — it’s a pattern. The sending has never once waited for the sent person to become impressive first.

You’ve been treating this week’s assignment like something you have to earn the right to hold, when the person who sent you never asked for your credentials in the first place.

If I really believed God’s presence — not my track record — is what qualifies me for this week, how would that change the way I walk into the first hard conversation on my calendar?

Before your first meeting today, say one sentence out loud, alone: “I was sent, not screened. He is with me in this.” Then go do the thing you were about to talk yourself out of.
