What Happens Between Sessions

The most important work often happens when weโ€™re not in the room together.

The Work

Between Sessions

Most coaching relationships are measured by session hours. That misses where change actually happens.

For every minute we spend together, I spend at least the same amount of time on your work between sessions โ€” often more. After every session with you, I put a second appointment on my calendar for your between-session work. That time is yours.

The TIME

Here is what that time is spent on

01 - The Written Record

Session Summary Notes โ€” within 72 hours

After every session, I write tailored notes in your private, HIPAA-compliant Google Doc, adapted to your preferred level of structure. I deliver them within 72 hours of our meeting so the work stays warm. Some clients read every word. Some skim. Both are fine. The clients who engage with the notes see the difference โ€” the notes help you see patterns you would otherwise miss and give you something concrete to return to between sessions.

02 - The Living Document

Your Engagement Guide

Every client has a living document that captures your story, your goals, your assessment highlights (MBTI Step II, EQ-i 2.0, CliftonStrengths 34, SALVES), and the focus areas weโ€™re actively working on. I refine it between sessions as new patterns emerge โ€” so weโ€™re never rebuilding context and you can see the arc of the work over time.

03 - The Deeper Layer

Focused work on your core beliefs

I focus especially on the core beliefs underneath the behavior. Thatโ€™s the layer where real change happens โ€” and itโ€™s the layer most coaching never reaches. Between sessions I think and pray through the blocks between what you know is true about God and how your life is actually being lived out. This is where the gap between head and heart gets named.

04 - The Weekly Rhythm

Dedicated weekly deep-thinking time

Each week I set aside focused, prayerful time devoted to my clients โ€” reviewing your patterns, your Session Summary Notes, and your Engagement Guide. This is the Strategic Leadership and Strategic Signature work that most coaches do not do. It is where the real preparation happens.

05 - Toward Your Goals

Strategy work toward your growth and clarity goals

I do basic strategy work between sessions to help you achieve the growth and strategic clarity goals weโ€™ve identified together. This is not a separate consulting engagement โ€” itโ€™s part of how I hold your work between sessions so our next conversation moves you forward.

06 - Staying Connected

Between-session communication

Email access between sessions is included. If something needs more than five minutes of my time โ€” a quick decision, a document review, a call before a hard conversation โ€” I bill for it separately so the primary engagement stays focused.

07 - The Long View

Quarterly reviews

Every quarter we step back for a formal review: progress against goals, updated focus areas, and โ€” for clients who choose it โ€” a Quarterly Family & Leadership Check-In that keeps the four relationships (God, self, spouse, those you lead) in view together.

08 - Tailored Resources

Personal consulting and research

When your situation calls for a framework, a book, an assessment, or a resource I donโ€™t already carry, I go find it. Between sessions I research and integrate what will actually serve you โ€” not whatโ€™s generic.

09 - Head to Heart

CHEWโ„ข integration

Gospel-centered formation exercises, Scripture passages, and reflection prompts are woven into the between-session work. The goal is not more content. The goal is Godโ€™s love moving from your head to your heart in the places you actually live.

10 - Behind the Scenes

A Practitionerโ€™s Guide for every client

When your situation calls for a framework, a book, an assessment, or a resource I donโ€™t already carry, I go find it. Between sessions I research and integrate what will actually serve you โ€” not whatโ€™s generic.

Why I Keep the Roster Limited

A note on how I hold this

I keep a limited client roster on purpose. The between-session work is the reason. If I take on more clients than I can carry well, this part of the work is the first thing that erodes โ€” and it is exactly the part that makes the difference.
