The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s love from head to heart for Christian professionals
9:47pm Thursday. The laptop is still open.
Your last productive hour ended at 7. What you are producing now is anxiety in the shape of work.
You know it. You are still not closing it.
CHEW with Me
C — Clarity — The extra hour is buying a false sense
Name the hour tonight when the work stopped being productive and started being management of a feeling.
That feeling is not lazy. It is the low-hum belief that if you close the laptop, tomorrow will come and something you cannot recover will be missing.
The extra hour is not building anything. It is buying a false sense that you are ahead of what you cannot control.
H — Hear — He gives His beloved sleep

This is not a verse to guilt you into an earlier bedtime. It is a Father telling you what He does for the ones He loves — He gives them sleep. He is not withholding productivity from you at 9:47pm. He is offering something the extra hour will not produce. Stay with what He says: “his beloved,” “sleep.” The gift is not tomorrow’s output. It is the rest that makes tomorrow possible.
“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest.” The Hebrew is stark. Empty. Not counterproductive — empty. Nothing is being added by the extra hour.
“Eating the bread of anxious toil.” The meal you eat when you work past the point is anxiety, not accomplishment. It fills the mouth. It does not feed the body.
“For he gives to his beloved sleep.” Not allows. Not permits. Gives. Sleep is a gift He hands to the ones He loves — like manna, showing up in the dark.
Today’s verse to hear:
“It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:2)
E — Exchange — Closing the laptop is a confession

The laptop is not the problem. The belief underneath the laptop is. You are still up because you do not fully believe the day is finished when He says it is finished.
Closing the laptop at 9:47pm is not surrender to fatigue. It is a small confession that you are His beloved and He is the one who carries the day into tomorrow.
Because God’s love is the kind that gives His beloved sleep — not the extra hour — how does that change the belief underneath the laptop at 9:47pm, and the way you close the day tonight?
Sit with that. Sixty seconds.
W — Walk — Set a hard stop tonight
Tonight, set a hard stop — twenty minutes from now if you are reading this at 9:47pm. Close the laptop. Say out loud: “I am His beloved. He gives sleep.”
Then go to bed. Whatever is undone will still be undone in the morning. It will also be lighter, because you will not be carrying it through the night.
If God is giving to His beloved in sleep, what are you refusing to receive by staying up?
With you on the journey,
Ryan
