Changing Your Mood with CHEW: How the Gospel Can Move You from a Funk to Real Joy

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

Ever have one of those days when nothing lifts? You’re irritable, heavy, or numb—caught in a “funk” that colors everything gray.
Maybe stress at work, a disappointment, or no clear reason at all has hijacked your mood. You want to feel joy, but the more you try, the more stuck you feel.
What if the Gospel could change not just your thoughts or actions, but even your emotions—right in the messy middle?
Here’s the Gospel secret: instead of chasing a better feeling, let CHEW move God’s love from your head to your heart, using a single, powerful question.

Gospel Insight: Joy Isn’t Achieved—It’s Received by Remembering the Depth of God’s Love
Jesus wants you to experience a joy no mood can erase: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11, ESV)
Surprise: Joy isn’t just for “high” days or natural optimists. The Gospel makes joy possible by rooting your mood in the solid ground of God’s unwavering love for you—in fact, the very same love He has for Jesus!
Neuroscience confirms what the New Testament teaches: what we dwell on—what we choose to remember and savor—can powerfully shift our emotional state. CHEW is not magic; it’s a practical path to move your meditation from self or circumstance to the deepest truth: “If God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, what changes about my joy… right now?”

Let’s CHEW on this together—and see what happens when you put Gospel truth right in the middle of your mood.

CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes

Confess (C):
Father, I confess: I’m in a funk. My mood is down. I feel irritated (or heavy, numb, anxious). I want to feel joy, but I don’t. There’s a gap between what I believe and what I feel.

Hear (H):
Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with?
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love… that your joy may be full.”
(John 15:9-11, ESV)
Your love for me is as strong and joyful as Your love for Jesus Himself.

Exchange (E):
If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, how would that impact the joy I would feel right now?
Today, I give You my anger, dullness, or weariness, and I receive the reality that I am fully, presently, unshakeably loved—joy that no circumstance can take away.

Walk (W):
Holy Spirit, guide me to the next step that pleases You.
Here’s the step: I’ll take 5 quiet minutes, breathe deeply, and repeat: “God loves me as much as He loves Jesus.” With each breath, I’ll invite this truth to color—and gently challenge—my mood for the rest of the day.

How to Use CHEW to Shift Your Emotions

1. Name the Funk, Don’t Minimize It
Be specific about your mood (irritated, sad, blah, anxious). Jesus doesn’t need you to fake a spiritual smile; honesty is the beginning of breakthrough.

2. Ask the Right Core CHEW Question
Use:
“If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, how would that impact my joy right now?”
Or try:
“…how would that shift this funk?”
“…how would that change my mood for the rest of today?”

3. Picture the Love Behind the Truth
Imagine God’s actual delight and affection toward Jesus—then picture Him holding and speaking the same over you—now.

4. Exchange Old Emotional Scripts for Gospel Reality
Give your current emotion to God and invite Him to plant the seed of joy, even if it’s just a crack of light in your heaviness.

5. Move Your Body
Take a five-minute walk, stretch, or even step outside. As you move, silently repeat: “I am fully loved—right now, as I am.”

6. Anchor Joy in Community
Text a friend, share your CHEW, or pray with another Believer. Let someone else echo the Gospel back to you when you can’t feel it alone.

7. Don’t Wait for Perfection—Celebrate Progress
If your mood shifts even 1%, thank God! Every step from funk toward joy is a gift, not a metric for spiritual “success.”

Worship Invitation
Praise God that joy is not achieved by willpower, but received as you focus on His delighted, never-ending love for you. Let your worship today be simply to rest—emotionally and mentally—knowing that Christ’s joy is strong enough for every low.
