How to CHEW When Life Gets Too Heavy: Facing Grief, Betrayal, and Anxiety with God’s Love

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

Last month, a driven executive lost a major client and heard secondhand that one of his closest advisors was leaving the company—without warning. He showed up at work, put on his best face for the team, and ran meeting after meeting, but by noon he couldn’t escape the ache in his chest. His mind kept spinning through “What did I miss? Why did this happen?” Even his best attempts at prayer bounced off the ceiling as the noise of grief and anxiety drowned out everything else that usually grounded him.

God’s Love Holds Our Hearts When Circumstances Overwhelm

When life’s heaviest moments hit—deep grief, betrayal, or gripping anxiety—Scripture never suggests we “move past” pain by force of will or master our feelings through sheer effort. Jesus, the radiance of God’s love (Hebrews 1:3), faced Gethsemane “sorrowful and troubled, even to death” (Matthew 26:38). He brought every raw emotion to His Father, showing the freedom and security we have to be deeply honest with God. His love wasn’t a competing force to pain; it is the only safe ground where honest hearts can truly rest.

Research reveals that naming and pouring out our hearts to God in the chaos of trial leads to faster spiritual recovery and more resilient hope. The cross declares: God allows only what He will redeem, and nothing separates His people from His love (Romans 8:38–39). Our hope in heavy seasons isn’t in making God’s love bigger—it’s in receiving that His love already overshadows and holds us, even when we feel crushed.

This Is Where CHEWing Moves the Heart…

CHEW in 3-5 Minutes:

Confess (C) to God
“Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling right now before You: I’m overwhelmed by grief, betrayal, anxiety, and none of my normal strategies are working. I feel distant from Your love and distracted by the weight of these circumstances.”

Hear (H) from God in Scripture
“Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with right now?”
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
“What is true about You or Your love in this? Your nearness doesn’t depend on my ability to feel it, and Your love is never overcome by my pain.”

Exchange (E) with God
“If I really believed God’s love is greater than my darkest circumstance and truly overshadows any storm or betrayal, how would that change the way I grieve, how long I hold onto resentment, and how I move forward in anxious seasons?”

“Today, I give You my fixation on what’s gone wrong and take hold of Your steadfast, overshadowing love.”

Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit
“Holy Spirit, please guide me to the next step I should take that will please You.”
“Here’s the next step I believe pleases You: This next time when grief or panic hits, I’ll pause, breathe, name what hurts, and remind myself ‘God’s love is fixed on me, not by my circumstance.’”
“Holy Spirit, if there’s a better step, shift me!”

Worship: Find Confidence in the God Who Holds You

When grief, betrayal, or anxiety threaten to define your day, God is not asking you to speed up through pain or win a spiritual sprint. He invites you to bring every honest word—anger, sorrow, confusion—to Him. Because Jesus bore our heaviest sorrows, we never face suffering alone. Each time you pause and re-anchor in His love, you are giving your heart to the only One truly able to hold it. Let worship be your return: not an escape from struggle, but the embrace of Christ who is near when your faith feels faint.
