The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals
There are days when the world feels heavy and every bit of good news bounces off a wall of sadness or stress. You used to know how to find joy—through music, movement, a good laugh, or time with friends—but lately, even thinking about fun feels like too much effort. Joy has left the building and you wonder: “Is it even worth trying?”
If “cheering up” feels out of reach, you’re not lazy or broken—just human. Yet what if you could spark real joy and fun, right where you are, using the tools God gives you—and even make it part of your CHEW?
Gospel Insight: God’s Love Invites You Into Joy—Even (and Especially) on Hard Days
The Bible is clear that joy isn’t a bonus for the few, but an open invitation to all God’s children—especially in hard seasons. “The joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
Surprise: God doesn’t wait for everything to get better before He offers joy. Joy starts as a gift—sometimes before your emotions catch up. Research even shows that when we practice “micro-joy”—small acts of gratitude, music, humor, or connection—our brains literally shift out of stress into hope.
God invites you to practice fun, not to ignore pain, but as an act of faith and spiritual resilience.
Let’s learn how to CHEW on joy.
CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes
Confess (C):
Father, today I feel flat, gray, maybe even numb or anxious. Joy feels far away, and it’s hard to believe it matters to You—or that I’ll ever feel it again.
Hear (H):
Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with now?
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11, ESV)
God’s presence is a wellspring of true joy—even when circumstances are hard and you have to hunt for it with Him.
Exchange (E):
If I really believed God’s love is joyful and delights to comfort me, how would that change my willingness to seek—even create—fun moments, even now?
Today, I give You the belief that I don’t deserve joy or that it’s “fake”; I receive Your promise that finding joy honors You, especially in bleak seasons.
Walk (W):
Holy Spirit, show me one playful, light, or fun step I can take today—in 5 minutes or less—to open the door to joy. Help me CHEW on Your goodness with my body, mind, and spirit.
How to Find and Create Joy When You’re Down—With or Without CHEW
1. Start Micro—Don’t Wait for Big Joy
Joy grows from small seeds, not giant leaps. Pick any “micro-joy:”
- Play a favorite song and dance—just 30 seconds
- Make a silly face in the mirror
- Text a meme or “dad joke” to a friend
- Watch a hilarious video, or read a favorite children’s book
- Step outside and notice five beautiful things
2. Pair Joy With Prayer—CHEW on It
During your CHEW, let joy be the “walk” step, not just the goal. Example:
- After CHEWing on a hard scripture, let your “Walk” be a belly laugh with your child, a slow sip of coffee in the sun, or five minutes playing fetch with a pet.
- Share, “Father, I receive Your joy as a gift right now, even if it’s small.”
3. Turn Confession Into Lament—Then Laughter
Let yourself express discouragement, but then ask God: “Show me one playful thing I can do for Your joy.”
Why it works: Vulnerability plus willingness primes your heart for hope.
4. Get Your Body Involved—Move and You Feel
Research and Scripture agree: movement can jumpstart joy (Psalm 30:11).
- Go for a walk, jog, or wiggle
- Try a stretch or hop
- Do a spontaneous “victory pose”—arms overhead, smile wide
5. Practice Curiosity—Joy Loves Wonder
Go outside and try to see something “new”—the sky, a bug, a tree, a color. Curiosity short-circuits rumination and opens your brain to delight.
6. Make Joy (and CHEW) Social
Invite someone to CHEW with you—swap gratitude lists, laugh at your own clumsy phrasing, or set a “fun CHEW” challenge: Who can come up with the most creative “Walk” step today?
7. Celebrate, Don’t Critique
If your joy is small or fleeting, thank God out loud, anyway. Name what you found (“I smiled for the first time all week!”).
Momentum builds on celebration, not perfection.
Worship Invitation
Pause, smile—even force one if you have to—and pray: “Lord, thank You that joy is close, not far. I worship You as the Giver of fun, laughter, invention, and wonder—especially on days I need it most.”
