A Story of Stewardship and Trust

One client, David, is a senior leader overseeing significant resources—complex budgets, charitable commitments, and opportunities for influence. For years, he excelled at generosity when the numbers made sense, but he noticed an internal tug whenever his giving required true sacrifice: “Will this disrupt my future plans? What if unexpected needs arise?” David wasn’t facing poverty or financial instability—in fact, affluence brought its own temptation: quietly believing that his responsibility was to control, not surrender, the outcomes. As markets shifted and new obligations arose, giving generously felt riskier, not just for his wallet, but for his sense of mastery and security.

Maybe You…

Maybe you’re diligent, disciplined, and generous “by the book”—yet still sense, deep down, a whisper of hesitation when God prompts you to give beyond what seems prudent or sustainable. Maybe your struggle isn’t whether you’ll have “enough,” but whether you’ll have control. In the private moments, is your trust in God’s provision or your ability to forecast and manage? Do you ever wonder: Does my legacy reflect God’s abundance, or my own calculated stewardship?

How Sabbath Restores Gospel Generosity

Biblically, Sabbath was not merely a pause—it was a statement: “God is my Provider. I work from rest, not for it.” For David, leaning into true Sabbath habits meant intentionally surrendering the illusion of control, celebrating that God owns it all, and returning regularly to dependence on Christ’s provision. Over time, Sabbath-anchored rest replaced subtle fear with a buoyant confidence—the kind that empowered spontaneous generosity, hospitality, and renewed open-handedness, even when the future was uncertain or when giving stretched beyond the line items labeled “safe.”

A CHEW™ Reset for Joyful Giving

Pause now to experience Gospel rest that leads to Gospel generosity:

  • Breathe: God’s love is active, generous, and delights in sustaining you beyond your own calculations.
  • Adore: “Father, thank You for being my true Provider—not just in abundance, but in every circumstance. Christ’s riches are mine, now and forever.”
  • Confess: Where am I managing out of self-reliance or concern for control? Have I quietly thought that my stewardship only “works” when nothing is ever lost or uncomfortable?
  • Hear:
    • “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” (Psalm 23:1)
    • “He who did not spare his own Son…will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32)
    • “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” (1 Timothy 6:18)
  • Exchange: If I really believed God’s love is unshakably generous, sovereign, and always enough for every need, how would that change my “prudence,” my openness to meet real needs, or how I define a “successful” life of stewardship and giving?
  • Walk: What is one step of generosity or hospitality—large or small—I will take today, trusting not my calculations, but God’s promise to supply?
  • Thanksgiving Worship: Thank you, Lord, for restoring my heart to trust Your generosity, instead of relying on my own wisdom or sense of enough.

CHEW On This™

Set an alarm for lunchtime today, and honestly wrestle again with the Exchange question above:

If I really believed God’s love is unshakably generous, sovereign, and always enough for every need, how would that change my “prudence,” my openness to meet real needs, or how I define a “successful” life of stewardship and giving?

Sometimes asking this one question at two points in your day opens new doors for heart-level clarity and real change.

Legacy Flows from Rest, Not Reluctance

For steward-leaders, the world echoes “be careful,” “plan ahead,” and “hedge your bets.” God calls Sabbath-people to rest, rejoice, and live out generosity that points unmistakably to Him—not self. The more our hearts rest in the riches of Christ, the more free we are to give, even when comfort or control is at risk. This is how real legacy—and real freedom—are built.
