The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

We all know that voice—the accuser that whispers, “You’re not enough, you’re defective, you’re only as valuable as your last success or failure.” That is shame. At its core, shame is more than a feeling; it is a core belief about the self. Shame convinces you that your story is “I am what I do,” trapping you in cycles of hiding, striving, or despairing. But underneath, shame is prideful rebellion—it says, “My verdict about myself matters more than God’s.”

Gospel Insight: Shame Is Pride Disguised, and Only God’s Verdict Holds

Shame pretends to be humility but is actually spiritual pride. When you live as if “I am what I do,” you deny the Gospel-won identity God has given: beloved, forgiven, chosen, adopted, justified (Ephesians 1:3–7; Romans 8:30, 33–34). Shame demands that you atone for yourself. You cling to failure or success as your definition, but both are pride—both turn from Christ’s finished work to your own.
The Christian is never “I am what I do.” In God’s eyes, it’s “I am who God says I am—even on my worst or best day” (Romans 8:1; Galatians 2:20).

Let’s CHEW on this freedom now.

CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes

Confess (C) to God:
Father, I confess I believe the lie that I am only as valuable as my last performance or mistake. I run to shame or self-congratulation instead of taking refuge in Your verdict of love.

Hear (H) from God in Scripture:
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1 John 3:1)
Your love—not shame or pride—defines who I am forever.

Exchange (E) with God:
If I really believed my identity is anchored in Christ, how would I respond to failure or praise this week?
Today, I reject shame’s self-story and receive Your relentless affirmation: I am your beloved child, full stop.

Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, what’s my next step?
Share with a trusted friend or mentor one place I let shame or pride define me. Meditate on the truths in Ephesians 1 every morning this week, and ask for help to live as God’s child, not my own critic.

Worship Invitation: Identity Rooted, Shame Defeated

Every time you rest in God’s verdict, not your own, shame loses its grip. Your identity is Gospel-secured and Christ-given, not earned or lost by your performance. Worship by celebrating whose you really are.
