Staying Connected to the Vine: How CHEW Refuels You to Face Every Challenge and Celebrate God’s Goodness

Are You Running Dry or Drawing Life from the Vine?

The tension isn’t just exhaustion—it’s that sense you’re running hard with the wrong fuel. Maybe after a hard meeting, you instinctively self-soothe—scrolling, snacking, venting—only to feel emptier. Or you hit a big win, and instead of joy, you feel relief, or immediately think, “What’s next?”
Jesus’ call isn’t just about daily devotions. He describes a way of living:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5, ESV)

God creates you to need His love—not to “top off” a good tank, but as your sole, sustaining source. CHEW is a rhythm to keep you truly connected, not just informed.

God’s Love Fuels All Fruit That Lasts

Performance, achievement, even wellbeing apart from abiding in Christ leads to cycles of pride, burnout, legalism, or shallow accomplishment. God’s love, on the other hand, is an endless well.
Returning to the Vine means pausing—sometimes for seconds, sometimes for a commute—to receive, not just do. Fruitfulness that endures, joy that’s deep, and humility in success all flow from His initiative, not your hustle.

CHEW On This™: How Will You Receive Nourishment from the Vine?

Pause with each question. This is where God moves your head knowledge into heart experience.

Confess

Where in your day are you working from empty, rather than relying on Christ?
Sample answer: “I jump from call to call, rarely asking for Your help or presence, and only notice when I’m already drained.”
How would you answer?

Hear

What does God’s Word reveal about His sustaining love in work, transition, or celebration?
Sample answer: “‘Whoever abides in Me…bears much fruit.’ Your love means I’m never without what I need, because You always provide it.”
How would you answer?

Exchange

If I really trust God wants to nourish, guide, and strengthen me just like a branch to the vine, how would that change my outlook, energy, or purpose?
Sample answer: “I would worry less about controlling outcomes and focus more on asking for Your filling and returning gratitude to You in every win or disappointment.”
How would you answer?

Walk

What one brief practice or pause today (10 minutes or less) could re-center me in Jesus rather than performance?
Sample answer: “I’ll use every moment between meetings to quietly pray, ‘Christ, I receive Your sufficiency for this next task—feed my heart for the sake of Your glory.’”
How would you answer?

Real-World Ways to Refuel and Stay Connected

1. Use Micro-Breaks as Spiritual Pit Stops
Every transition (standing up, walking to a printer, moving between Zooms) is a chance to pause—breathe, and pray, “Jesus, nourish me again.”
Why it works: Frequent, brief returns keep you sensitive to when you’re getting depleted, and recalibrate your perspective.

2. Make Every Accomplishment a Call to Gratitude
After a “win,” turn naturally to praise: “Every good thing is from You, Lord.”
Why it works: Gratitude lifts you out of self-focus and joyfully redirects any glory to the true source.

3. CHEW Between Meetings, Not Just in Mornings
Take 2–3 minutes to walk through Confess, Hear, Exchange, Walk when moving from one focus to another.
Why it works: These micro-refuels shift your mood, clarify your motives, and preserve a living sense of God’s presence.

4. Stack Movement with Reflection
Pair CHEW with habits like driving, walking, or waiting—use voice notes or silent thought during motion.
Why it works: Habit-stacking builds consistency. Movement helps you process and integrate heart-level truth all day.

5. Turn Rest and Pauses Into an Act of Trust
Choose a moment to sit, sip, or step away—and pray, “Your strength, not mine. Your outcomes, not my proving.”
Why it works: Resting is a spiritual statement: God is the actor; my value isn’t in constant output.

6. Check Motives When Fatigue Surfaces
When you catch yourself weary or driven, pause: “Father, am I trying to prove myself, or receiving this as a way to serve You?”
Why it works: Honest self-checks protect you from pride and realign your heart to true worship.

7. Celebrate Every Return—Even Imperfect Ones
Acknowledge every attempt to reconnect, however clumsy: “Christ, I need You—and I receive again what only You can give.”
Why it works: Growth happens as you notice God’s providing, not your perfection.

8. Ask for Help When Disconnection Becomes the Norm
Reach out for prayer, a CHEW partner, or deeper counsel when days pass with little spiritual awareness.
Why it works: God’s love is often mediated through community; you don’t have to refuel alone.

Worship Response: Abide and Give Thanks

Right now, pause and pray:
“Jesus, You are my Vine—my strength, joy, and fuel. I trust that everything good and lasting in my day and work comes from Your love supplying what I lack. Help me return again and again, for Your glory and my joy.”
