The Last Ten Percent — What My Body Would Not Let Me Fake

Ninety percent of the eating turnaround came from repentance.

I stopped medicating stress with food. Greek yogurt instead of the drive-through. Grilled chicken instead of the late-night snack. The scale moved. The energy came back.

Ten percent would not move. No matter how disciplined I got.

C — Clarity — Repentance did what repentance could do

For a long time I read the last ten percent as spiritual. If I just repented harder. If I just walked with the Lord more faithfully. If I just prayed longer over the meal.

None of it moved the number. Not because repentance did not matter. Repentance had already done what repentance could do.

The last ten percent was biology. Hormones I could not out-discipline. A metabolic pattern I could not out-pray. My body was telling me something my devotional life could not fix.

H — Hear — Your body is a temple

This is not a verse to shame you about your body. It is a Father telling you the body He bought is a temple He indwells — and He finishes what He started in it. Stay with what He says: “temple of the Holy Spirit,” “bought with a price,” “glorify God in your body.” The body is His work. The last ten percent is His too.

“Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit.” Not a container He is renting. A temple. He indwells it. He is invested in it. He is the one who finishes it.

“You were bought with a price.” The price already paid names the body as His possession, not yours to shame or hate.

“So glorify God in your body.” The imperative rests on the indicative. Because He owns it and indwells it, you can glorify Him in it — including in the parts that repentance alone will not move.

Today’s verse to hear:

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)

“God finishes what He starts.”

E — Exchange — Repentance and biology both belong to Him

The 90/10 taught me something I want to hand off. Repentance does what only repentance can do. It stops medicating. It restores the will. It reorders the appetite.

But repentance cannot do biology’s job. When the last stubborn percentage will not move, that is not always a failure of holiness. Sometimes it is your body telling you it needs a different kind of help — a doctor, a lab panel, a specialist — to finish what repentance rightly began. God finishes what He starts, and He uses more than one tool. See Letting What You Love Cheer On What God Loves for the fuller version of what that reordering looked like for me.

When I really believed God finishes what He starts — in a body He bought and indwells — the last ten percent stopped being evidence of failed sanctification and started being the place I got to see Him work through help I would not have asked for.

Because God’s love is the kind that finishes what He starts in your body — through repentance and through a doctor — how does that change the stubborn place you have been ashamed to bring to Him, and the appointment you have been avoiding this week?

Sit with that. Sixty seconds.

W — Walk — Book the appointment this week

This week, if there is a stubborn place in your body stewardship that repentance alone has not moved, do one thing. Book the appointment. Order the lab. Call the specialist. Trust that God finishes what He starts — and that He often uses the very help you have been avoiding.

Then keep the repentance where repentance belongs. Keep the biology where biology belongs. Let Him have both.
