The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals
David is a 38-year-old VP of operations known for his discipline and results. But when it comes to his secret struggle with pornography, motivation never lasts. He’ll go strong for two weeks—praying, resisting, feeling victorious—and then one stressful evening, it all collapses. He’s tried accountability software, memorizing Scripture, and promising God he’ll do better. But every strategy eventually fails when his feelings shift. What David hasn’t realized yet is that he’s been relying on motivation instead of Gospel-fueled commitment. And those two things couldn’t be more different.
Why Commitment—Not Motivation—Breaks Strongholds
Here’s the truth most Christians miss: Motivation is feelings-based and fluctuates like the weather. Commitment is mindset-based and steady like bedrock.
Motivation says, “I feel like doing this today.” Commitment says, “I do this regardless of how I feel today.”
Research proves that discipline beats motivation every single time. Olympic athletes don’t wait to feel inspired—they show up because they’ve made a binding commitment. Michael Phelps trained 365 days a year for six years not because he felt motivated, but because he’d decided: pool time means pool time, period.
The same principle applies to breaking stronghold sins. If you wait until you feel like resisting temptation, praying, or returning to God’s love, you will lose. Temptation attacks when motivation has abandoned you.
But here’s what makes Christian commitment different from worldly discipline: You’re not committing to white-knuckle your way through. You’re committing to return to God’s love every single day—especially when you fail.
The only commitment that lasts is commitment fueled by receiving God’s love, not striving for His approval. This is why the question “What part of God’s love do I need right now?” is so powerful. You’re not managing behavior—you’re training your heart to run TO God’s love instead of FROM it.
And here’s the Gospel truth that changes everything: True commitment isn’t measured by how many times you resist temptation. It’s measured by how many times you return to God after you fall.
CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes
Confess (C) to God
“Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling right now before You about my commitment. I confess I’ve been waiting for motivation instead of making a binding decision. I’ve let my feelings dictate my actions instead of living from who You say I am.”
Hear (H) from God in Scripture
“Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with right now?”
“Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1–2)
What is true about You or Your love in this?
You finished what You started not by motivation but by loving commitment. You invite me to keep returning to Your love—not just once, but every single day, every moment I need You.
Exchange (E) with God
Option 1 (Beginner CHEWer):
“If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, what would change right now?”
Option 2 (Intermediate CHEWer):
“If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, how would that change the way I commit to fighting my stronghold sin daily?”
Option 3 (Advanced CHEWer):
“If I really believed God’s love is steadfast and pursuing, how would that change my response when I break my commitment and want to hide in shame instead of running back to Him?”
“Today, I give You my discouragement and excuses about motivation. I take hold of Your relentless, steadfast love that empowers me to commit—with my mind, not just my mood.”
Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit
“Holy Spirit, please guide me to the next step I should take that will please You.”
“Here’s the step I believe pleases You: I commit to [name one specific action rooted in my God-given identity—e.g., ‘As God’s beloved child, I commit to CHEW daily at 6 AM,’ or ‘As one called to purity, I commit to immediately flee any room where temptation strikes’]. I will tell one person this commitment today and ask them to check in on me weekly.”
“Holy Spirit, if there’s a better step, shift me!”
Worship Invitation: Commitment as Worship
Every time you show up when you don’t feel like it, you’re declaring that God’s love is worth trusting more than your emotions. Jesus didn’t wait to feel motivated to save you—He committed because He loved you to the end.
Will you make that commitment today? Not to be perfect, but to return to His love 101 times, 1,001 times, 10,001 times?
Father, help me commit—not with willpower, but with deep trust in Your unchanging love. Show me who You’ve already declared me to be, and help me live it out daily.
