When Success Feels Empty: A Gratitude CHEW for Hearts That Have Lost Their Wonder

The Daily CHEW™

CHEW on God’s Love. Live Transformed. Multiply Hope

This morning I caught myself rushing through my usual routine—quality coffee, view of the city from my home office, another successful quarter behind us—and feeling absolutely nothing. Not stress, not excitement, not satisfaction. Just a flat, mechanical moving through motions that should have brought some sense of accomplishment or joy. By 8 AM, I realized I hadn’t truly noticed or appreciated anything in weeks, maybe months.

Maybe you recognize this pattern. Maybe success has become so routine that you’ve stopped seeing God’s gifts in it. Maybe you’re so focused on what needs to happen next that you’ve lost the ability to rest in what He’s already provided. Maybe you’ve felt that subtle but persistent ache of a heart that’s forgotten how to be genuinely grateful—not just politely thankful, but deeply moved by God’s kindness in ordinary moments.

Here’s what I’ve learned from walking with high-achievers who seem to “have it all”: gratitude isn’t primarily about counting blessings or maintaining positive thinking. It’s about returning to wonder at God’s specific, personal love for you, recognizing that every good gift—from morning coffee to meaningful work to difficult growth—flows from His heart toward yours. When we operate from entitlement or emotional numbness, even our greatest blessings become invisible. But God’s love offers something transformative—the ability to see His hand in everything and respond with a heart that’s alive to His goodness.

Awakening Wonder in the Midst of Routine

Join me for a CHEW right now—designed to reconnect you with God’s specific kindness in this very moment.

CHEW in 2-5 Minutes:

  1. Pause and look around—literally notice three things in your immediate environment that reflect God’s care for you. Maybe it’s the warmth of your home, the technology that connects you to people you love, or simply the breath in your lungs.
  2. Adore: “Father, You are the giver of every good gift. You are generous and gracious.”
  3. Confess: Where have I been taking Your gifts for granted? What blessings have become so routine that I’ve stopped seeing them as expressions of Your love? Where has my heart grown numb or entitled?
  4. Hear: What truth about God’s love do I most need to reawaken gratitude?
    • “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights” – James 1:17
    • “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18
    • “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever” – Psalm 136:1
  5. Exchange: If God’s love truly delights in blessing me, I would exchange my tendency to focus on what’s missing for appreciation of what He’s provided. I would exchange my emotional numbness for wonder at His daily kindness. I would exchange my entitled expectations for grateful recognition of His grace.
  6. Walk: What’s one specific way I can express gratitude today that flows from genuine appreciation rather than obligation? Maybe it’s writing a thank-you note to someone who’s impacted my life. Maybe it’s taking a moment to truly taste my next meal. Maybe it’s pausing to thank God for something so basic I usually ignore it.
  7. Thanksgiving & Worship: Thank God for three specific things that happened in the last 24 hours—not just good things, but ways He showed His care even in challenges or ordinary moments. Let your heart really feel grateful, not just think grateful thoughts.

Remember This

Biblical gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is perfect or manufacturing happy feelings. It’s about recognizing God’s love threading through both blessings and hardships, both achievements and setbacks. A grateful heart sees His kindness in morning coffee and difficult conversations, in successful meetings and unexpected delays.

CHEW On This™:

If I really believed that God’s love is generous delight that rejoices in giving me good gifts, how would that change the way I receive His daily provisions and respond to both blessings and challenges?

The CHEW system works best when practiced in community. Consider sharing specific gratitudes with family or friends. Explore what changes when you create consistent rhythms for recognizing God’s love in ordinary moments—not just during crisis or celebration, but as a daily awareness that transforms how you see everything.
