The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

Client Scenario

Jason has spent years trying to beat his stronghold sin. He knows the patterns, the triggers, and every accountability trick. But the more he focuses on self-improvement and “not failing,” the more exhausted and discouraged he gets. What should occupy his mind? Is victory about fighting the wrong hard enough, or fixing his attention somewhere better?

Gospel Insight: Scripture Calls Us to Fix Our Eyes on God, Not the Stronghold

The Bible never commands us to make our primary focus fighting sin for its own sake. Instead, God calls us to seek Him:

  • “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” (Colossians 3:2)
  • “Let us…run with endurance…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1–2)
  • “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness…” (Matthew 6:33)
The consistent pattern is clear: Transformation is born from returning, seeking, and savoring God Himself and His work for us in Christ. As you engage with Him, stronghold sins lose their power—not because you look away from reality, but because a greater affection draws your gaze and shapes your habits.

How to CHEW in a Scripturally Focused Way

  • Confess (C):
Admit not just your failure, but when your focus has drifted to self, sin, or striving rather than Jesus.
“Father, I confess my attention is so often consumed with what I’m against rather than whom I’m for.
  • Hear (H):
Draw near with Scripture that stirs up affection for Jesus, awe at God’s power, or wonder at the Gospel story.
“Father, remind me that real life is found as I fix my attention and affection on You.”
Meditate on “set your minds on things above” (Colossians 3:2), and let your heart imagine a day filled more by God’s grace than your self-effort.
  • Exchange (E):
    Ask:
“If I truly believed freedom grows by seeking Christ and savoring His supremacy, not just by policing my own failure, how would my routines and focus change today?”
  • Walk (W):
Each time you sense the pull of temptation or discouragement, use it as a cue:
Pause, redirect your thoughts upward, even for 30 seconds. Make your goal seeing more of God’s character, not just less of your sin.
Repeat this pattern—let returning to God’s reality become as automatic as self-awareness.

Worship Invitation

Worship is not just self-reflection or troubleshooting, but a deliberate returning of your attention and affection to God. As you CHEW this way, you’re living in the pattern of Scripture—letting His story, attributes, and promises reshape you from the inside out.
