The Task Jethro Would Take Off Your Calendar This Wednesday

Wednesday. Middle of the week. You look at your calendar and see it.

The task you are still doing that someone on your team should be doing.

Not because you are proud. Because it is easier to keep doing than to hand off.

C — Clarity — You were never the whole system

Name the task. Be specific. It is one line on Wednesday’s calendar.

Now name the person who could do it — not as well as you today, but better than you in six months if you let them.

The reason it is still on your calendar is not skill. It is the small, humming belief that if you release it, something you cannot fix will break.

H — Hear — The design was never solo

This is not a verse to shame you into delegation. It is a father-in-law telling a leader that a load God did not intend for one person will grind two — the leader and the people the leader is serving. Stay with what he says: “not good,” “wear yourselves out,” “not able to do it alone.” The design was never solo.

“What you are doing is not good.” Jethro is not questioning Moses’s ability. He is naming that the shape of the work is wrong. A good outcome cannot come from a broken structure.

“You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out.” Both. The leader burns out from the load; the people burn out from waiting.

“The thing is too heavy for you.” Not a rebuke. A relief. God did not weigh the load to your solo capacity. He weighed it to a body.

Today’s verse to hear:

“Moses’ father-in-law said to him, ‘What you are doing is not good. You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.’” (Exodus 18:17-18)

E — Exchange — You are one part of a body

The delegation you are avoiding is not a productivity move. It is a return to the design. You were never the whole system. You are one part of a body that was made to share the load.

The person you hand it to grows. You get freed to the work only you can do. The organization steadies. Nobody wears out.

Because God’s love is the kind that designed a body — not a solo carrier — how does that change the one task you have been unwilling to release, and the person you would be freeing to grow if you did?

Sit with that. Sixty seconds.

W — Walk — Hand off one task today

Before you leave your desk today, pick one task on this week’s calendar and identify the person who will carry it going forward. Send them one message. Not a proposal. A hand-off with the date it moves.

Then let it move. Watch what grows in them and what steadies in you.
