The Ten Minutes on the Saturday Errand That Your Kids Will Remember Forty Years From Now

Saturday morning. Errand list. One kid in the passenger seat.

You are already thinking about the next stop. They are looking out the window.

The ten minutes in the car is the discipleship. You keep saving it for the family devotion that never quite happens.

C — Clarity — Discipleship is smaller than you thought

Name the errand you are running today with one of your kids in the car. Or the walk from the driveway to the door. Or the ten minutes you will be alone with them washing dishes.

That is Deuteronomy 6:7. That is where Moses said the teaching happens.

You have been saving the discipleship for a moment big enough to feel spiritual. Moses says the moment already exists — and it is small.

H — Hear — The place is the errand

This is not a verse to make you a better family devotion leader. It is a Father telling you the discipleship of your children happens in the ordinary passages of the day — the sitting, the walking, the lying down, the rising. Stay with what He says: “talk of them,” “by the way,” “when you rise.” The place is the errand. The time is now.

“You shall teach them diligently.” The Hebrew word — shanan — means to sharpen, to impress by repetition. It is not a lecture. It is a repeated small carving over years.

“When you walk by the way.” Not when you sit down for family devotions. When you walk. The errand. The trip to the field. The Saturday morning drive.

The four settings — sit, walk, lie down, rise — cover the whole day. Moses is not carving out a slot. He is naming the whole life as the classroom.

Today’s verse to hear:

“You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deuteronomy 6:7)

E — Exchange — The ten minutes is real discipleship

The Saturday errand is not a substitute for real discipleship. It is real discipleship. The ten minutes in the car is not less than the family devotion. It is often more.

Your kids will not remember the curriculum. They will remember the tone of the ten minutes. Whether you were present. Whether Jesus came up naturally. Whether the ordinary passage carried a real Father in it.

Because God’s love is the kind that puts the discipleship of your children in the ordinary ten minutes — not the big spiritual moment — how does that change the Saturday errand you are running today, and the way you carry Jesus into it?

Today, on one Saturday errand, put the phone in the back seat or the console. Look at the kid next to you. Ask one real question. Let the answer breathe.

Then let Jesus come up naturally. Not as a lesson. As the Person the day is already about.
