You Read the Six Drivers — Here’s How to Know Which One Is Actually Running Your Week

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s love from head to heart for Christian professionals

You’ve read the deep-dive on your primary driver — maybe more than once. It named things about you accurately enough to be a little unsettling. You recognized yourself in the “first-thought test,” saw your own patterns in the “gift and distortion” section, and probably nodded along to the four moves.

But this week feels different. The thing you’re wrestling with doesn’t quite match the driver you thought was yours. You read yourself as a Significance-driven leader, but this week it’s not impact you’re craving — it’s just wanting someone, anyone, to check in on how you’re actually doing. That doesn’t sound like Significance. It sounds like Acceptance, or maybe Love.

Here’s what almost nobody tells you about SALVES: your drivers aren’t a fixed personality type you get assigned once and carry unchanged for the rest of your life. They shift — by season, by circumstance, by what’s actually under pressure right now. Knowing your primary driver in general is useful. Knowing which driver is loudest this week is what actually changes how you lead, decide, and rest today.

Why Drivers Move

A Value-driven leader who’s spent a decade proving competence at work can suddenly find Security running hot the moment a health scare or a market downturn threatens the ground under their feet. A Significance-driven founder who’s built something that matters can find Enjoyment strangely absent after the exit — the thing they built is secure, but nothing feels like delight anymore. This isn’t inconsistency. It’s what it looks like to be a whole person moving through real seasons, not a static profile.

The mistake is treating your primary driver like a permanent diagnosis and then feeling confused — or worse, feeling like something’s wrong with you — when a different driver is clearly the one spiking this month. The better move is to keep re-diagnosing. Your primary driver tells you where you’re most vulnerable over the long run. Your loudest driver this week tells you where God is actually meeting you right now.

A Simple Weekly Check-In

You don’t need a full assessment to re-diagnose. Three questions, asked honestly once a week — Sunday night or Monday morning both work well — will surface it:

1. What’s the first thing I feel dread about this week? Not what you should be worried about — what you actually feel a knot about. That knot usually points straight at the loudest driver.

2. Where have I felt most exposed or most numb in the last seven days? Exposure often points to Security or Acceptance. Numbness often points to Enjoyment or Value.

3. If I’m honest, what am I quietly trying to prove or protect this week? The answer to that question is almost always the substitute your loudest driver is currently leaning on.

Once you’ve named it, go back to that specific driver’s deep-dive — not as a refresher on your “type,” but as a working document for this particular week. Reread the gift and distortion section with this week’s situation in mind. Run the four moves against what’s actually in front of you right now, not against a general pattern from six months ago.

Why This Matters More Than Getting the Label Right

There’s a real temptation to turn SALVES into another form of self-optimization — nailing down your “type” the way you might nail down your Enneagram number, and then using it mostly to explain yourself to other people. That’s not what this is for. The value of naming your loudest driver isn’t the label. It’s what the label lets you do next: bring something specific and true to God instead of a vague, undifferentiated stress.

A prayer like “help me handle this week” is real, but it’s not particular. A prayer like “Father, my Acceptance driver is loud right now — I’m afraid this team doesn’t actually want me leading them — and I bring that fear to You instead of performing my way past it” is a prayer that can actually be answered, because it names the actual thing.

C.H.E.W. on This

Clarity — The Driver You Thought You Knew

You are not a fixed profile. You are a person moving through real seasons, and the driver that’s loudest this week may not be the one you’d have guessed a year ago. That’s not confusion. That’s honest self-awareness doing its job.

Hear — What Stays Constant When Your Drivers Shift

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)

Your drivers move. His character doesn’t. That’s not a throwaway line of comfort — it’s the actual ground you’re standing on while you re-diagnose which longing is loudest this week. Whatever shifted — whether it’s Security this month after years of Value running the show, or Enjoyment gone quiet after a season of chasing Significance — the God who meets that driver has not shifted at all. The consistency you’re looking for isn’t in pinning down a permanent label for yourself. It’s in the One who doesn’t change while you do.

Exchange — Fixed Answer vs. Ongoing Honesty

Most of us want a fixed answer — “I am a Significance person,” full stop — because a fixed label feels safer than ongoing honesty.

Because God’s love is unchanging even while my drivers shift week to week, how does that change the way I hold my own self-understanding — less like a permanent label, more like an ongoing conversation with Him?

Walk — Run the Check-In This Week

Before this week is over, sit down for five minutes and answer the three questions above. Name the driver that’s actually loudest right now — even if it surprises you. Then go reread that specific driver’s deep-dive with this week, not last year, in mind.
