Forgiving for Advantage: Surprising Benefits of Letting Go—And Why Not Forgiving Can Feel Like Power

The Daily CHEW™
Chew on God’s Love. Live Transformed. Multiply Hope.

There was a time when I stuffed a work offense, convincing myself it wasn’t impacting me. Outwardly, I kept performing, but inwardly, I felt more isolated, less creative, and increasingly bitter. Holding a grudge felt strangely powerful—like I was keeping leverage, maintaining some control over who could hurt or influence me. Yet over time, the “power” of unforgiveness turned out to be a prison, eroding both my wellbeing and my ability to build trust, influence, and legacy.

What Builds Through CHEW

Daily return to God’s love is a strategic reset—not just for peace, but for real advantage in relationships, leadership, and inner strength. Scientific studies confirm: forgiveness is linked to healthier bodies, sharper minds, lower stress, stronger teams, and higher performance at work.

Why Not Forgiving Feels Like Power

  • Refusing to forgive can make you feel tough, impenetrable, or “in control.”
  • Grudges can feel like leverage—especially in competitive, high-stakes environments.
  • Holding onto resentment can boost a sense of moral superiority or give a false conviction that you’re protected from further hurt.
  • Anger and blame can become part of your identity, helping you avoid vulnerability or admit any weakness.

But these feelings of power are deceptive. The longer you cling to a grudge, the more it eats away at clarity, joy, and capacity to lead or love well.

The Surprising Benefits of Letting Go: Forgiveness as High-Performance Advantage

For Teams and Leadership

  • Boosts Trust and Engagement: Forgiveness directly nurtures trust and increases team performance and morale.
  • Drives Innovation and Collaboration: Leaders and teams that forgive are more open to creative risk-taking, effective communication, and long-term success.
  • Reduces Conflict and Burnout: Unforgiveness heightens stress, absenteeism, and turnover; forgiveness builds unity and resilience.

For Personal and Spiritual Health

  • Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Forgiveness lowers chronic stress, prevents toxic anger, and improves overall mental health outcomes.
  • Restores Hope and Happiness: Letting go of resentment increases hopefulness, self-esteem, and life satisfaction—often measurably so.
  • Physical Wellbeing: Forgiveness improves sleep, boosts the immune system, and reduces headaches, high blood pressure, and even heart risks.
  • Frees You to Grow: Passing on forgiveness allows high performers to rise above past wounds, reclaim energy, and see new opportunities—personally and professionally.

Confess

Where do you find yourself withholding forgiveness—feeling powerful or safer because of it? Name those places, honestly, to God. Notice how those old wounds might actually be stealing clarity, collaboration, or joy.

Hear

God is never naïve about our wounds, but His love is always the initiator of restoration.

“Bear with each other and forgive…Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” (Colossians 3:13)

His forgiveness sets you free—not just from the offender, but from the spiritual and emotional cost of holding on.

Exchange

Engage the reality of God’s unwavering love—move beyond knowing it intellectually to personally experiencing its power in your leadership, relationships, and heart. The more honestly you reflect on where forgiveness can unlock growth, the greater your breakthrough.

CHEW On This™:
If I truly believed God’s love is strong enough to release me from the pressure and exhaustion of unforgiveness, how would that change how I approach the people and wounds that still feel powerful in my story today?

Walk

Identify one situation at work or in life where a grudge has felt like leverage. Pray a statement of release—entrusting the need for justice, protection, and future influence to God.

Surprising Gospel Perspective: Forgiveness as the Path to Lasting Power

The world says holding onto offense is strength. The Gospel says true power, creativity, influence, and wellbeing come from letting go—entrusting every outcome to God’s love, and daring to operate from freedom, not fear.

Celebration

Every honest step toward forgiveness is true advantage. Celebrate the moments you risk release—because each one breaks a costly cycle and multiplies real impact.

Gratitude & Prayer

Father, thank You for loving me enough to offer true power in release. Show me where to let go, trusting You to restore what matters most.

Today I thank You for: ___________ (where You’re helping free my heart for greater influence and joy).
