When Evenings Come Early: How We Can Hold Each Other Up During Daylight Saving’s Strain

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love From Head to Heart for Christian Professionals.

I’ve always prided myself on being a morning person, early to rise… but every year when Daylight Saving Time strikes, even as a lifelong New Yorker transplanted to Atlanta, I feel it. The sun dips sooner. My energy scatters. My wife and I notice a little more depression, our children’s routines just a bit off, and even our beloved family walks become an effort when darkness comes so soon. Last spring, I learned on-air that heart attack rates spike 24% the Monday after the change—a vivid reminder this isn’t just “all in your head.”

Maybe you sense it too—your marriage feels a little brittle, your kids are restless, tempers run short, or evenings fill with isolation or screen time instead of laughter and connection. Perhaps your family dinners get rushed, or you and your spouse feel more disconnected as fatigue creeps in long before bedtime. Beneath these shifts, there’s a longing: for light, for comfort, for relationships that feel steady when everything outside is changing.

The truth? This is about more than just lost daylight or another tough schedule. It’s a spiritual and relational invitation. The blues and fatigue are symptoms of deeper longings—for security, connection, and hope that outlast any season. Self-help hacks help a little, but only God’s love truly gathers a family, mends a marriage, and grounds a lonely heart in steady hope.

Let’s pause together for a relational CHEW—a practical way to realign your heart and home with God’s love, right when your routines and relationships feel stretched.

CHEW: Three Minutes to Return to Light, Together

Take three slow breaths—whether you’re alone, with a spouse, or gathered with your family. Remember: God’s love is here in the darkness, before a single thing gets fixed.

“Father, You love us in this darkness—right now, as we are. We don’t have to earn your attention or rally our own motivation.”

Confess what’s really stirring beneath the surface. Are you frustrated with your spouse or kids? Feeling down, restless, or snappy? Maybe there’s loneliness, or just a heavy sense of the “blahs” pressing on everyone.

Hear- What Gospel promise does your family, friendship, or marriage need today?

  • “God makes everything beautiful in its time.” (Ecclesiastes 3:11)
  • “For everything there is a season.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
  • “I am the light of the world… whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
  • “Nothing… will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ…” (Romans 8:39)

Now, the Exchange: If we really believed God’s love is steady—present in both light and early night—how would today change?
I would exchange the urge to zone out for gentle presence.
We’d trade impatience or withdrawal for a simple, honest walk or a quiet word of encouragement.

Walk- What’s one small step you can take toward the people in your home tonight? A five-minute game, a gentle check-in, a prayer over your family, or even just an “I’m here and I love you”—even if today feels heavy.

Thank God for any glimmer of connection, any breath of hope or patience, however small. Rest your heart (and those you love) in the faithfulness of His love—tonight, here, now.

Remember:
Seasons change, moods shift, but every honest return to God and each other is a real win. You are not failing if your family or marriage feels stretched—God delights in your presence and trust, not your perfection.

CHEW On This™:

If I really believed God’s love is my family’s anchor—steady through every changing season—how would that change how I handle irritability, fatigue, or shortness with those I love?

Repeat this CHEW tomorrow, or invite your spouse or family into this rhythm in the evenings. Real transformation comes when honest return to love—God’s and one another’s—becomes a way of life, not just a good idea.
