A High-Performer’s Dilemma
Recently, a client—let’s call him James—sat across from me with a confession not of shame, but of exhaustion. By every outside measure, James was thriving: senior leader in a Fortune 500, respected in his church, faithful husband and dad. But what gnawed at him wasn’t the echo of “not enough,” but the subtle tug-of-war between God’s direction and the breakneck pace of the world around him. James had reached the place where succeeding for himself was no longer the real motivation; he genuinely wanted to honor God in his work. Yet he realized that simply swapping one finish line for another didn’t quiet the urge to produce, achieve, or outpace.
What High Performers Quietly Feel
James described the sacred hours of his morning—meant for prayer and resetting his heart—regularly interrupted by the dashboard glow of urgent emails and “orphan-mode” thinking. He wasn’t striving to prove his worth, but fighting to trust that God’s timing was actually better than another strategic win. For high-performers like James, the ache isn’t about fearing failure or self-worth—it’s wondering if their best, even when for God, is ever “enough.” Can they trust that God actually has a perfect pace—and that peace can grow, even in seasons of “slowness”?
Shifting to God’s Timeline Changes Everything
In our work together, James discovered a new freedom. Anchoring his leadership to God’s pace required surrender—not of ambition, but of control. Instead of counting progress only by the speed of breakthroughs, he began to measure his days by faithfulness, returning to God’s love as his starting point, not only future outcomes. The more James trusted God’s sovereignty over results, the less burnt out and anxious he became—and the more real joy he found in leading, even through the ordinary.
God’s love became his rest—not something to achieve but something to receive, daily. When he was tempted to hustle harder, James learned to pause and CHEW™: returning to the truth that God brings the increase, and our worth was never meant to come from velocity. This shift didn’t slow him down for the sake of it; it multiplied impact he could never create alone.
Try a CHEW™ Reset Today
Wherever you lead, try this simple practice—whether or not you feel “behind”:
- Pause and breathe, recognizing God’s love is present now, before the next win.
- Adore: “Father, You love me as I am, not based on what I finish. Thank you.”
- Confess: What hurry, fear, or longing am I carrying today—especially in slow seasons?
- Hear: What does God’s Word reveal for this moment?
- “My grace is sufficient for you…” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
- “He restores my soul.” (Psalm 23)
- “Nothing…will separate us from the love of God.” (Romans 8:39)
- Exchange: If I really believed God’s love is patient, persistent, and even delights to shepherd me at the pace I most need, how would that change the pressure I feel to accelerate, my anxiety about being “behind,” or my longing for strategic clarity in this season?
- Walk: What is one action I’ll take today to return to God’s loving pace?
- Thanksgiving: Thank God for measuring by Christ’s faithfulness, not my speed.
CHEW On This™
If I really believed God’s love is unhurried, steadfast, and unfailingly committed to my true good—how would that change the way I view “slow” growth, seasons of waiting, or my desire for breakthrough? What new freedom, peace, or confidence would be possible for me today?
Real Growth: Slow, Sustainable, Secure
The world prizes velocity—but God’s vision grows deep roots. James discovered that real transformation was never about getting ahead, but growing into his calling—and that every honest return to God’s love is progress, even when it’s not on his timeline. There’s profound hope for every high-performer: God is already working, and every act of trusting His pace is a lasting win.
