When Your Commute Becomes Sacred Space: A Travel CHEW for Time That Feels Lost

The Daily CHEW™

CHEW on God’s Love. Live Transformed. Multiply Hope

This morning at 6:45 AM, I found myself sitting in Atlanta traffic on I-285, watching the same brake lights I see every weekday, feeling that familiar frustration rise. Twenty-five minutes to downtown, another twenty-five back this evening—nearly an hour daily of what felt like dead time. My mind started calculating: that’s five hours a week, over 250 hours a year just sitting in traffic. By the time I reached my office, I was already mentally exhausted from the commute alone, having spent the entire drive rehearsing my day’s anxieties instead of arriving refreshed and centered.

Maybe you know this pattern. Maybe it’s your daily drive to work where your mind races through every possible problem before you even reach your desk, or the airport waiting that becomes prime territory for worry and impatience, or those business trips where you feel spiritually disconnected from your normal rhythms and routines. Maybe you’ve felt that frustration of losing hours each week to travel time that feels wasted when your schedule is already too packed.

Here’s what I’ve learned through my own travel struggles and walking with busy professionals: travel time isn’t primarily about transportation logistics or time management. It’s about recognizing that God is present in the journey, not just at the destination, and that He can transform our most routine or frustrating transitions into opportunities for spiritual growth and heart renewal. When we approach travel as lost time or necessary evil, we miss the gift of uninterrupted space with God. But God’s love offers something transformative—the ability to redeem every moment of movement as time with Him.

Transforming Dead Time into Sacred Time

Join me for a flexible CHEW right now—designed specifically for various travel situations, from daily commutes to longer trips.

CHEW in 3-10 Minutes (adapt to your travel time):

  1. Settle into the journey—whether you’re driving, flying, or walking, acknowledge that God is with you right now, in this vehicle, on this route, during this transition time.
  2. Adore (30 seconds – 1 minute): “Father, you are everywhere, which is amazing. You’re not waiting for me to arrive somewhere—You’re here with me now, in this car, on this plane, in this moment of movement.”
  3. Confess (1-2 minutes): What frustrations or anxieties am I carrying into this travel time? How am I treating this journey—as wasted time, necessary evil, or opportunity for worry? Where is my heart focused on destinations instead of being present with God right now?
  4. Hear (2-5 minutes, depending on travel length): What truth about God’s love do I most need during this journey?
    • “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” – Psalm 23:4
    • “In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” – Proverbs 3:6
    • “The Lord your God is with you wherever you go” – Joshua 1:9
    • “Be still, and know that I am God” – Psalm 46:10
    • “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” – Philippians 4:19
  5. Exchange (1-2 minutes): If God’s love truly accompanies me, I would exchange my frustration with travel delays for trust in His timing. I would exchange my anxiety about destinations for peace in His presence during the journey. I would exchange my impatience with traffic for gratitude for uninterrupted time with Him.
  6. Walk (1-2 minutes): What’s one way I can approach the rest of this journey or my arrival destination from God’s love rather than travel stress? Maybe it’s praying for other travelers around me. Maybe it’s arriving at my destination with a heart focused on serving rather than getting through my agenda. Maybe it’s using this time to prepare my heart for the people I’ll meet today.
  7. Thanksgiving & Worship (30 seconds – 1 minute): Thank God for His presence during this journey. Thank Him that no travel time is wasted when spent with Him. Rest in His love that travels with you wherever you go.

Practical Applications for Different Travel Scenarios

Daily Commute (3-5 minutes): Use this time to prepare your heart for the day ahead or to decompress from the day behind. Consider memorizing Scripture during regular commutes.

Business Travel (5-10 minutes): Airport delays and long flights become opportunities for extended CHEW sessions. Use travel disruptions as reminders to trust God’s timing over your schedule.

Family Trips (flexible timing): Model for your family how to find God in journey moments, not just destinations.

Remember This

Sacred travel isn’t about having perfectly peaceful commutes or never feeling frustrated with delays. It’s about returning—again and again—to the awareness that God is present in movement, not just in arrival. He uses journeys to shape hearts, create space for reflection, and provide unhurried time that our busy lives often lack.

CHEW On This™:

If I really believed God’s love is constant presence that travels with me everywhere, how would that change the way I approach daily commutes, business trips, and those inevitable travel frustrations?

The CHEW system works best when practiced in community. Consider sharing travel insights with family members or colleagues. Explore what changes when you create consistent rhythms for finding God in journey moments—transforming routine travel into regular spiritual growth opportunities.
