When God’s Promises Meet Our Mixed Faith: Learning From Jacob’s Messes and God’s Mercy

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

A Legacy of Promises—and Mixed Faith

God made Jacob staggering, unilateral promises: descendants as numerous as the stars, a land for his children, and a presence that would never leave him (Genesis 28:13-15). Yet when the pressure came—when famine hit and the risk of losing Benjamin felt like too much—Jacob’s actions showed a heart at war with itself. The temptation to scheme, control, despair, or numb emerged even with God’s Word in his ears.

But Jacob wasn’t alone in this. Abraham lied repeatedly despite direct promises (Genesis 12, 20). Sarah laughed at God’s Word. The Israelites doubted in the desert, even after the Red Sea. God’s people have always lived with faith that is real and yet always mixed, always maturing, never perfect (Isaiah 64:6).

Consequences and Grace

Jacob’s story is a warning and an encouragement: our mixed faith creates genuine consequences—relational dysfunction, regret, and missed opportunities for peace. Like Jacob, God gives us unilateral promises: full forgiveness, unbreakable adoption, daily presence, and sovereignty for our good no matter what. But mixed faith still tempts us to create plans B, to manipulate, to retreat into performance or despair—and sometimes we live out the consequences for years.

This is where CHEWing transforms everything…

We’re not called to beat ourselves up for imperfect trust but to keep returning to God’s love—again and again. That’s the only way to slowly shift from self-reliance to deep security.

CHEW in 3-5 Minutes (Precise, God-Focused):

  1. Confess (C) to God: “Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling: I know Your promises, but I’m acting like they won’t be enough when tested. I’m scared and falling back into old patterns.”
  2. Hear (H) from God in Scripture: “Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with right now?”
    • “My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19)
    • “God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind.” (Numbers 23:19)
  3. Exchange (E) with God: “If I really believed God’s love is unwavering and His promises are already guaranteed, how would that change my need to manipulate or control outcomes today?”
    • “Today, I give You my plans B and take hold of Your promised provision and presence.”
  4. Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit: “Holy Spirit, please guide me to the next step I should take that will please You.”
    • “Here’s the step I believe pleases You: waiting on You before acting—or repairing what I broke with humility.”
    • “Holy Spirit, if there’s a better step, shift me!”

Growing in Trust, One Cycle at a Time

This cycle—God promises, I struggle, His love wins anyway—is the real Christian life. God will let us feel the weight of our self-reliance, even the pain of consequences, but He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). The more we return to His love through honest CHEWing, the more we find our security in Him, not in our ability to avoid pain.

So the next time we’re pushed to the brink, raw doubts will surface. Yet, instead of running to old patterns, we meet God honestly. We trust—however imperfectly—that God, who loves us as much as He loves Jesus, is refining and rescuing us for Himself. Even if His final rescue is taking us to Heaven, it’s far better than fearing trial or choosing sin.

Remember, this side of Heaven our trust will never be flawless (Isaiah 64:6), but we can keep growing. Like Paul in prison, or martyrs at the stake, our faith can become more resilient and our joy deeper—even amid suffering or failure.

CHEW On This™: If I really believed God’s love is unwavering and His promises are already guaranteed, how would that change my need to manipulate or control outcomes today? Return to this question throughout the day—notice what new answers rise. See if as you return if God’s love moves from head to heart just a little bit more. See how it impacts times of pressure.

Community: Navigating promises and trials isn’t individual work. Safe connection multiplies courage and spiritual clarity.
