CHEWing on the Move: How Micro-Breaks and Commutes Transform Your Workday

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

When you’re working ten-hour days, you naturally have multiple transition moments throughout the day—stepping away from your desk, walking between meetings, moving around the office, or taking brief breaks to reset. That’s been my experience. During any busy workday, I find myself with about ten natural transition moments—and I’ve learned to use these not just as breaks, but as opportunities to pause for a Core CHEW question. Between those micro-moments and my daily commutes, I’m CHEWing 10-12 times a day—all without adding a single minute to my schedule. Driving gives me space for deeper CHEWs, and when I’m home, I sometimes type or voice-record longer reflections. I’ve discovered that stacking CHEWing with movement and natural work transitions has led to my most consistent, insightful, and heart-level encounters with God’s love.

Why Habit Stacking with Movement Unlocks Transformation on Busy Days

You don’t need a silent retreat to cultivate a deep connection with God—the best transformation often happens in ordinary, moving moments. A 2019 behavioral study from Duke showed that associating spiritual reflection with routines (like walking, driving, or natural work breaks) increased the odds of sustained practice by more than 60%. Busy professionals who habit stack (pairing a new habit with an automatic action) are far more likely to build deeply ingrained, life-changing spiritual rhythms.

Jesus Himself “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38)—encountering the Father not just in the temple, but along roads, by lakes, and on mountain walks. The Psalms envision lives where God’s love accompanies every step (“when I sit and when I rise,” Psalm 139:2). Movement and prayer weren’t competing activities—they were intertwined.

The key insight: Making CHEW part of your daily transitions transforms dead moments into windows for head-to-heart connection. Instead of waiting for ideal circumstances, you build a life where God’s love reshapes every ordinary movement—from walking down the hall to driving home. Plus, when you CHEW throughout the day, you often catch yourself early when you start disconnecting from God and heading toward temptation. It’s the kind of reset that creates immediate shifts—not foolproof, but far more effective than not checking in at all.

This Is Where CHEWing Moves the Heart…

CHEW in 3-5 Minutes—Anywhere, Anytime:

Confess (C) to God
“Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling in this transition moment: am I anxious, hurried, trying too hard? Or am I just numb, moving through the motions? Am I starting to drift from You?”

Hear (H) from God in Scripture
“Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with right now?”
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

“What is true about You or Your love in this moment? You’re as close in the hallway as in a sanctuary, as real in my commute as in a church service.”

Exchange (E) with God
“If I really believed God’s love is uninterrupted, always accessible, and eager to meet me even in the mess of a workday, how would that change how rushed or alone I feel, my attitude toward ‘in-between’ moments, and my ability to reset quickly throughout the day?”

“Today, I give You my scattered, distracted mind and take hold of Your constant nearness.”

Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit
“Holy Spirit, please guide me to the next step I should take that will please You.”
“Here’s the next step I believe pleases You: This week, I’ll turn every natural work transition and movement into a chance for a Core CHEW question, inviting Your presence in the middle of my everyday tasks.”
“Holy Spirit, if there’s a better step, shift me!”

Worship: Turning Every Transition into Head-to-Heart Clarity

God’s love is too big for one quiet time a day. He invites you to walk with Him in the hallways, on your drive, between meetings, and in every natural pause. Let today’s worship be found in trusting every movement as a place for connection and asking boldly: “Lord, what are You saying right here, right now?” It’s in these stacked, ordinary moments that God’s love often moves deepest—turning your workdays into a laboratory for daily transformation and providing the course corrections that keep you walking closely with Him.

CHEW On This™

If I really believed God’s love is uninterrupted, always accessible, and eager to meet me even in the mess of a workday, how would that change how rushed or alone I feel, my attitude toward ‘in-between’ moments, and my ability to reset quickly throughout the day?

Return to that CHEW question the next time you walk, drive, or take a natural break during your day. Watch as God’s love finds you, no matter where you are.

Community: Try the Mobile CHEW Challenge. For one week, every time you transition between tasks or locations, turn it into a head-to-heart check-in. Share your stories and insights in community here.
