Pursuing the Encounter: How God’s Love Breaks Strongholds That Won’t Budge

The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals

A client once shared his frustration: “I’ve been completely free from shame-based living and people-pleasing for years. I don’t even remember the last time I struggled with those patterns. But I still battle food compulsions daily, even though I know all the right theology. I’ve made vows, studied Scripture, and understand that my body is God’s temple. What’s the difference? Why are some strongholds completely broken while others persist despite all my Gospel knowledge?”

His question reveals the pattern that breaks every stronghold: lasting breakthrough doesn’t come from more theological understanding—it comes from pursuing an encounter with God’s love with the same relentless persistence that Jesus taught in His parables.

The Biblical Pattern: Relentless Pursuit Leads to Life-Changing Encounter

If you examine the testimonies of Christians who’ve experienced complete freedom from strongholds, the same pattern emerges: they actively pursued an encounter with God’s love with relentless persistence, He met them in that pursuit, their core beliefs about His love shifted from false to true, and the stronghold lost its power.

This aligns with what we explored in Going Deeper: How to Move Beyond Surface-Level CHEW—core beliefs ARE essential, and transformation happens when you experience God’s love at a level that displaces the false beliefs driving your stronghold.

Scripture consistently shows people pursuing encounters with God: David earnestly seeking God like one thirsting in a dry land (Psalm 63:1), Jacob wrestling all night refusing to let go until he received blessing (Genesis 32:26), Jesus commanding us to seek first God’s kingdom (Matthew 6:33), and the promise that those who seek God with all their heart will find Him (Jeremiah 29:13). We pursue the encounter, but God gives the transformation.

The Four-Step Breakthrough Framework

Step 1: Person Pursues Encounter with God’s Love—Relentlessly

You actively seek God, not just information about God, with the persistence Jesus taught in His parables. Consider the widow who “kept coming” to the unjust judge until he gave her justice (Luke 18:3-5), or the friend who went at midnight and refused to leave until he got bread (Luke 11:5-8). Jesus taught these parables specifically about prayer persistence, saying we should “always pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1) and “ask, seek, knock” with ongoing determination (Luke 11:9).

CHEWing day and night is one powerful way to pursue this encounter—repeatedly returning to God’s love throughout your day, especially when your stronghold tempts you. Like the persistent widow, you keep coming to God with the same core question: “What haven’t I experienced yet about Your love that would break this stronghold’s power?”

Step 2: God Meets Those Who Earnestly Seek Him

Scripture promises that God responds to relentless seeking: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him” (Lamentations 3:25).

The key is that God rewards not casual seeking, but earnest, wholehearted pursuit. Just as the unjust judge finally responded to the widow’s persistence, and the friend finally got up to give bread because of bold asking, your heavenly Father—who is infinitely more loving—will respond to your relentless pursuit of encountering His love.

Step 3: Core Beliefs About God’s Love Shift from False to True

The encounter transforms beliefs, not just emotions. Your heart moves from “I’m only loved when I perform/behave/control” to “God loves me as much as He loves Jesus.” This isn’t positive thinking—it’s revealed truth becoming heart reality through encounter.

Step 4: Stronghold Loses Power Because It Was Built on the False Belief

When the false belief about God’s love is displaced, the stronghold collapses. You no longer need the false comfort, control, or escape because you’ve encountered the real thing.

CHEW On This™ in 3–5 Minutes: Pursuing the Life-Changing Encounter

Confess (C) to God
“Father, here’s what I’m honestly feeling: I have theological knowledge about Your love, but my stronghold suggests I haven’t encountered Your love deeply enough to displace the false beliefs driving this pattern. I confess that I need to pursue an encounter with Your love with the same relentless persistence as the widow seeking justice and the friend seeking bread.”

Hear (H) from God in Scripture
“Father, what Scripture do You want me to wrestle with about pursuing encounter with Your love?”
“And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.” (Luke 18:7-8)

“What is true about You and Your response to persistent seeking? You delight in those who cry to You day and night. You give justice speedily to those who refuse to give up pursuing You.”

Exchange (E) with God

Option 1 (Beginner CHEWer):
“If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, what would change right now?”

Option 2 (Intermediate CHEWer):
“If I really believed God loves me as much as He loves Jesus, what false belief about His love would that displace? How would that change the power this stronghold has over me?”

Option 3 (Advanced CHEWer):
“If I really believed God’s love for me is so complete that I could encounter it with the same persistence as the widow seeking justice, what would that do to my core belief about what I need for security, comfort, or satisfaction? How would relentlessly seeking His love until I encounter it transform what I believe about His sufficiency?”

Today, Father, I commit to CHEWing day and night like the elect who cry to You continually. I will not let You go until You bless me with an encounter that breaks this stronghold.

Walk (W) with the Holy Spirit
“Holy Spirit, please guide me in relentless pursuit of this encounter:”

  1. “What false belief about God’s love is driving my stronghold?” (Name it specifically)
  2. “What would I need to encounter about God’s love to displace that false belief?” (Be specific about the encounter you’re seeking)
  3. “How can I CHEW on this pursuit day and night until I encounter what I’m seeking?” (Your specific plan for persistent seeking)

“Holy Spirit, as I pursue this encounter with the persistence of the widow and the midnight friend, meet me with the transforming power of God’s love that breaks strongholds.”

Worship: The God Who Delights in Persistent Seekers

God doesn’t hide from relentless seekers—He rewards them. When you pursue Him with the same persistence as the widow seeking justice and the friend seeking bread, He will give you what you’re seeking. Every stronghold is built on a lie about His love for you. The encounter with His true love, pursued with biblical persistence, dismantles the lie and sets you free.

Worship today by becoming a relentless pursuer: “God, I will seek You day and night through CHEW until I encounter Your love so powerfully that this stronghold loses its grip.”
