The Daily CHEW™
Moving God’s Love from Head to Heart for Christian Professionals
Last week, a regional director at a healthcare system called me at 7 PM, clearly overwhelmed. “I’ve got department meetings tomorrow, a budget deadline Friday, and my team is looking to me for answers I don’t have,” he said, his voice tight with stress. “I know God loves me, but honestly, that feels theoretical right now when my heart is racing and my mind won’t stop spinning. I need something practical—something that actually works when the pressure hits.” His struggle is one I hear repeatedly: high-performing Christians who know Gospel truth intellectually but need tools to experience God’s love functionally during their most stressful moments.
When Knowledge Isn’t Enough: The Anxious Leader’s Dilemma
Leadership anxiety operates differently than general stress because it carries the weight of others’ expectations and outcomes beyond our control. Research shows that managers experience 40% higher stress levels than their direct reports, primarily due to the responsibility they carry for team outcomes and departmental performance. But here’s what changes everything: anxiety isn’t overcome by better time management or stress reduction techniques—it’s transformed when God’s love moves from head knowledge to heart experience in the moment pressure hits.
The Bible reveals this truth: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Notice the progression: we bring our specific anxieties to God’s love and receive His transcendent peace. This isn’t positive thinking—it’s Gospel reality becoming functional in your leadership challenges.
This is where CHEWing transforms everything…
Instead of trying to push through stress or manage anxiety, pause with me for a practical return to God’s love that works in real-time pressure situations.
CHEW in 3-5 Minutes:
- Take three deep breaths — God’s love is present now, even in your most overwhelming circumstances.
- Adore: “Father, You are completely in control when everything feels chaotic. Your love is my stability when leadership pressures mount.”
- Confess: “What am I actually feeling about this pressure? Is it fear of disappointing my team, responsibility for outcomes I can’t control, or anxiety about meeting expectations?”
- Hear: Scripture + truth you need:
- “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7)
- “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28)
- Exchange: If I really believed God’s love is stronger than my current pressures, how would that change my response to this overwhelming situation?
- I would exchange frantic problem-solving for wise action from peace.
- I would exchange carrying everything alone for sharing the burden with God.
- Walk: One specific action—maybe delegating one task, taking a brief walk, or scheduling time tomorrow to properly address a key concern.
- Thanksgiving & Worship: “Thank You that Your love doesn’t depend on perfect outcomes. I worship You as the God who gives peace in the storm, not just after it.”
