Reading the Room: How God’s Love Deepens Emotional Intelligence at Work

A Story of Change on the Job

Carlos had always been respected for his sharp mind and ability to solve problems fast. But in meetings, he often missed the undercurrent—a colleague’s hesitation, a team member’s unspoken frustration, the weary shrug that followed a tough quarter. One day, after a tense all-hands, his assistant quietly closed the door and said, “You’re brilliant—but sometimes, the energy in the room gets lost.” For the first time, Carlos realized that his need to “be right” had come at the cost of truly seeing those around him. He wanted more than technical wins; he longed to be the kind of leader who left people strengthened, not just outperformed.

Why Emotional Intelligence Feels Risky (and Needed)

Perhaps you—like Carlos—are skilled at strategy and execution but sense that something vital happens “underneath” the spreadsheets and plans. Maybe you’ve noticed that morale dips after successful projects, or honest feedback feels rare on your team. Maybe you’ve worked hard to stay focused and steady, and worry that slowing down to notice emotions will undermine your edge—or expose you to discomfort you’d rather avoid.

Christlike Empathy: Why It Makes the Real Difference

The Gospel does not just sharpen our minds—it softens our hearts. Jesus never missed what was “in the room”: from the silent pain of a woman at a well, to the pride in Peter’s bravado, to the ache in his followers’ doubts, Christ brought presence, patience, and gentle honesty. As leaders, self-awareness grounded in God’s love means we are safe to face our blind spots, slow down for people, and risk having our own hearts changed. When we embrace this, feedback becomes opportunity, and humility unlocks a team’s true potential.

For Carlos, CHEWing through meetings became a new non-negotiable. He learned to check his own heart first—“What am I feeling? Am I present?”—and made space for honest emotion on his team. Trust grew. Slights could be named and forgiven. The team’s creativity blossomed—not in spite of empathy and self-awareness, but because real belonging fostered boldness.

A CHEW™ Reset for Relational Clarity

  • Breathe: God’s love is attentive, never dismissive, and He sees what others might miss.
  • Adore: “Father, thank You for truly seeing me, for knowing the thoughts and feelings I can’t even put into words.”
  • Confess: Where have I hurried past, minimized, or misread the emotions of those I lead or work alongside? Where have I been afraid to notice my own heart?
  • Hear:
    • “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” (Romans 12:15)
    • “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:4)
    • “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1)
  • Exchange: If I really believed God’s love is present, wise, and fully attuned to both my emotions and those around me, how would that change the way I walk into meetings, read the room, or respond to team tension?
  • Walk: What’s one relational “temperature check” or act of empathy I will practice today—listening longer, asking a deeper question, or sharing vulnerably myself?
  • Thanksgiving Worship: Thank You, Lord, for revealing what’s beneath the surface, and for growing in me a heart that loves like Yours.

CHEW On This™

Set an alarm before your next key meeting or conversation, and return to this Exchange question:

If I really believed God’s love is present, wise, and fully attuned to both my emotions and those around me, how would that change the way I walk into meetings, read the room, or respond to team tension?

Let this single question reframe your approach all week.

Better Teams Start With Christlike Awareness

Skill builds companies, but self-aware, Gospel-shaped love builds a culture. When work becomes relationally safer, teams dare to create, fail, dream, and repair. Emotional intelligence is not only a “soft” skill—it’s a Christlike one, and it’s how we make God’s love visible at work.
